Understanding Vinegar Syndrome (VS)

What It Is:
Vinegar Syndrome is a form of irreversible degradation unique to polyester-based microfilm and microfiche. It occurs when the plastic base (usually Triacetate) hydrolyzes in the presence of moisture, heat, or light over time.

The Chemical Process:

  1. Hydrolysis: Moisture breaks down the chemical bonds in the film base.
  2. Acid Formation: This process produces acetic acid (the main component of vinegar).
  3. Base Erosion: The acid eats away at the plastic base, causing it to become brittle and crumble.

The Visual Signs:

  • Discoloration: The film may turn yellow or brownish-orange.
  • Brittleness: The film becomes brittle like dry leaves; a gentle bend can cause it to snap rather than flex.
  • "Base Curl": The edges of the film roll naturally curve inward, making them difficult to unroll without damage.

Not all microfilm is created equal. Knowing your collection's specific risks is the first step in prevention.

  • Temperature: Warmth (above 68°F / 20°C) speeds up the reaction rate exponentially.
  • Light Exposure: UV light can degrade dyes and plastics, though it is less of a factor for VS than heat/moisture.

  1. Stop Handling: Do not unroll or handle the reels unnecessarily; each handling introduces stress and potential damage.
  2. Isolate: Move affected reels away from other films to prevent cross-contamination of dust or acid.
